Define Clear and Practical Measures of Conservation Success

Our first foundation of success is to help practitioners define what they are trying to achieve and determine whether they are heading toward their goal. As shown in the model below, we can define four components of conservation:

  • Conservation targets, or ecosystems and species, we are ultimately trying to conserve
  • Current and future direct threats that degrade our conservation targets
  • Indirect threats and opportunities that drive or exacerbate our direct threats
  • Strategies or actions undertaken by conservation actors to counter these threats or capitalize on these opportunities.

Foundations of Success works with our partners to develop clear and practical methods and indicators across all four sections of this model.
